The Maui project was truly a dream come true for MHD. Located on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the clients' directions were "make it cool," giving Marla complete creative control over all aspects of design.

She decided to keep it simple and in the Hawaiian plantation vernacular. Nearly every piece of furniture was custom made. Local furniture makers were employed and salvaged fallen koa wood was used for much of the furniture. Hawaiian seamstresses were sourced to to sew native-style bedspreads, and a bronze foundry cast handmade pulls from local flora for cabinets .

The entire front of the house was removed to install NanaWalls that could be pulled back for a complete panoramic view of the ocean. A bocce ball court and swimming pool were added. At certain times of the year, whales migrate so close that it's possible to swim among them. The sculpture over the chaise lounge was inspired by the whales and wave breaks.
